Step #4…my moral inventory

I love making “to do” lists. And I’ll confess that I will even write things on the list that I’ve already done just so I can then immediately scratch them off.

The list I was about to make was something completely different.  More than simply different…it was the most difficult, yet freeing list I have ever made.

The idols in my life often engage spiritual battle over the rule and rein of my heart. I know we have been set apart for holiness but there are idols and struggles in my life that keep me from living out the greatest commandment and reflecting the radiance of Christ to those He puts in my path every day.

So I set out to make a searching and fearless inventory of the idols in my heart. A moral inventory to go deeper than surface symptoms and identify the root issues of my heart that drive my own ungodly thoughts, actions, and emotions.

I wouldn’t be alone. The Lord would be with me. He challenges us to examine and test our ways. He challenges us to ask Him to search our heart. I would also have my wife, a sponsor, and several friends shoulder next to me on the journey.  Praise God for them all.

“Let us examine and test our ways, and let us return to the Lord.” Lamentations 3:40

Oh my Lord, you search and you know me. You know when I sit. You know when I rise. You know what I think. You know where Im going. Nothing oh Lord, can hide from Your eyes. Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting..” Psalm 139:23-24.

Others had warned me of this step. I had ignored them. I set out.

I was ill prepared for what was to greet me on the path.
