Gucci or Sam Moon?

How often I hear a woman complimenting another on a certain purse and they smile as they respond, “oh, its Sam Moon.”  (For those that don’t live in Dallas, Sam Moon is a store of knock-off purses and jewelry…you can insert the name of any cheap street vendor that sells Gucci purses for $5).  I’m not sure why they feel the need to shatter the illusion.  Their friend would never have known…but the owner would.

My wife loves the Pomegranate Noir scent from Jo Malone.  I bought her a set of scented candles for Christmas.  I’m pretty sure I could have gotten her a lilac candle from Hallmark with a Jo Malone sticker and she couldn’t tell the difference.  But I would have known.

I’ll confess, I have a gold card from Starbucks personalized with my name on it.  I enjoy going to “SB” for the atmosphere, people watching, people talking, muffins, chai tea, and there are 3 on every corner.  But $5 for a venti caramel macchiato?  Seriously?  How about a 50-cent cup of coffee from 7-11 and just put a ton of sugar in it.  My taste buds couldn’t tell the difference.  But I would know.

Here is another one.  “Im reading through the Bible in a year.”  So what?  What’s your intent?  To get recognition, to check off a box, or to draw closer to Christ?  Honestly.

So here is the question…spiritually, what is our intent?  Who are we trying to fool this year?

In Matthew 13:44 he sold everything to buy the field and have the treasure.  He didn’t buy a faux-treasure from a street vendor.  He wasn’t trying to fool anyone.  He gave everything he had to get the real thing.  He went all in on the original.

Paul, the “Hebrew of all Hebrews” said in Philippians 3:12 that he still hadn’t reached his goal…he tells us to press on, strain on toward the goal.  What’s the goal?  Christ!

2 Timothy 4:7 says to finish the race…not register for the race so you can get the tshirt.  It says in 1 Corinthians 9:24 to run in order to get the prize…not run in order to appear to get the prize.

Get off the “spiritual couch” this year.  Don’t settle. God is an original.  Anything less is a knock-off.  The world may not notice, but He will.  And if we are honest with ourselves in our heart…so will we.

My plan is to be ferociously hedonistic this year and chase after the treasure!  No substitutes.
